Warning over hacks into online shopping accounts
Cyber-criminals have gained access to online retailer accounts using login details obtained from previous data breaches
SHOPPERS are being warned to check their online shopping accounts after a rise in reports of cyber-criminals hacking into customer profiles and ordering expensive goods.
The warning comes from Report Fraud after criminals gained access to online retailer accounts using login details obtained from previous data breaches.
One of the major retailers affected is Argos, with reports mentioning the company rising by 323 per cent in May compared to April, when 154 reports were made. This year so far there have been 1,175 Argos reports.
Criminals are taking advantage of people using the same passwords for different websites. Once they have access to an account, they can place orders and arrange to collect items in store, sometimes before the genuine customer realises anything is wrong.
Detective Chief Inspector Steven Kettle, Head of Crime Services at Report Fraud, said: “Report Fraud urges anyone with online retail accounts to remain vigilant and be alert to any unusual or suspicious activity. It is essential to take appropriate steps to protect your accounts by following our guidance.”
A few simple steps can make a big difference:
Use a different password for every important account
Create strong passwords using three random words
Turn on two-step verification wherever possible
Avoid saving card details in shopping accounts
Check your accounts regularly for anything unusual
Anyone who discovers activity they do not recognise should change their password straight away, and make sure they update any other accounts where they have used the same details.
Anyone who believes they may have been affected by fraud can report it to Report Fraud at www.reportfraud.police.uk or by calling 0300 123 2040.
