BOBBY Van staff and volunteers had a day to remember when they were among 5,000 people invited for tea in the gardens of Buckingham Palace.
Director Jennie Shaw received the Royal Garden Party invites and chose trustee Marion Deegan and her daughter Ellie, Administrator Celia Wheeler and her husband Andrew, Stay Safe Online volunteer Helen Vennard and her son Jamie to attend.
The highlight of the afternoon was being introduced to Bobby Van patron Her Majesty The Queen. “She was utterly charming and engaging, and took time to speak to each of us asking what we did at WBVT,” said Celia.
“She spoke about how she had been a patron for many years, how important the charity is and how vital it is for people to feel safe at home. She also talked about the importance of volunteers.”

The Royal introduction was an unexpected highlight for Helen and Jamie. “We weren’t aware we were to be introduced to the Queen, so this was a big surprise for me and even a bigger surprise for Jamie,” she said.
“We kept saying what a surreal experience it was for both of us. It was a bit nerve wracking talking with her but you could see how much she was interested in the support the Bobby Van offers to the community. I spoke to her about the support we particularly offer to people who have experienced domestic violence.”

Celia was impressed by the way the event was run. “It was all managed with such military precision, from the way we passed through security to being directed around the side of the palace, where the most immaculate lawn opened out with a brass band playing and a huge tea tent set down one side,” she said.
“That of course was huge and impressively organised, with the staff working like clockwork serving teas and cold drinks along with a tasty array of finger sandwiches, wraps and cakes.”
After meeting the Queen, the Bobby Van guests had time to wander around the palace grounds. “The gardens were beautiful and featured a big lake, along with some very impressive statues, and as we wandered around there was the noise of parakeets flying overhead,” said Celia.
“To attend the Royal Garden Party and to be presented to Her Majesty was an absolute privilege and a memory to be cherished, all six of us totally enjoyed the occasion.”
