Warning over number spoofing scams

More than 2,000 reports of number fraud have been made in the first three months of 2025, with victims losing more than £1.5 million

CYBER CRIME experts are warning that scammers are impersonating genuine mobile phone numbers to trick people into handing over their money.

Action Fraud and the National Fraud Intelligence Bureau have issued a warning about a rise in number spoofing scams, in which fraudsters clone the numbers of trusted organisations – including banks, utilities and even police forces – so their calls appear genuine.

Already, more than 2,000 reports have been made about these scams in the first three months of 2025, with victims losing more than £1.5 million.

Here’s how to protect yourself:

  • Be suspicious of unexpected calls: If someone rings you out of the blue claiming to be from your bank, phone company or another trusted organisation, hang up and call them back on the official number using a different device.

  • Don’t rely on caller ID: Just because a number looks familiar doesn’t mean it’s genuine. Fraudsters can easily manipulate phone systems to display false numbers.

  • Never give out personal information: Legitimate organisations will never ask for sensitive details like full passwords, banking PINs or one-time verification codes over the phone.

  • Take your time: Scammers rely on creating panic to pressure people into acting quickly. Take a moment to stop and think before responding.

  • Report suspicious activity: If you believe you’ve been targeted, contact your bank immediately and report it to Action Fraud via actionfraud.police.uk or by calling 0300 123 2040.
